Granite Myths Debunked

There are a lot of myths about granite and its use as a countertop. In this article we’d like to clear up any confusion about granite.

CleaningMyth #1: Granite is a high maintenance stone

Granite is a semi-porous material which means it needs to be sealed. Kootenay Granite provides 100% sealed granite for every installation. We also provide a maintenance kit with a sealer product that can be used no more than once every 1-2 years. The process is simple and takes only 20 minutes to complete.

SpillMyth #2: Granite stains easily

The difference between granite and marble is that marble is softer and more porous.  Therefore, marble tends to stain and show water spots. When granite is sealed properly, staining is highly unlikely. As with any countertop, if a spill occurs, wipe it up. Do this and you’ll never have to worry about a stain.

CuttingMyth #3: Granite can be scratched when you cut on it

Granite is one of the most resilient surfaces you can use and it is much harder than metal knives. Your stone will not scratch but you may want to use a cutting board as your knives will dull quicker on the granite.

CitrusMyth #4: Citric acid and vinegar will damage granite

This myth is often confused with the truth about marble and other soft stones which can be etched with citric acid and vinegar products. Most household products can’t etch granite surfaces. To maintain your granite’s rich color and elegant finish only use products that are safe for your hands.

Hot PotMyth #5: You can’t put hot things on granite

Granite is formed by extreme heat and pressure combined beneath Earth’s crust. It cannot be affected by heat from a cook top or frying pan. In fact, it will withstand temperatures up to 1200°F.
